Dr. Masahiro Uchida
Masahiro Uchida is the General Manager of the Energy Conversion Department at the Technology Platform Center, Corporate R&D Division of IHI Corporation.
He received his Ph.D. from Nagoya University, Japan, in March 2005.
Following his doctoral studies, he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Nagoya University from April 2005 to March 2006. He joined IHI Corporation in April 2006, where he has been engaged in the research and development of combustion technologies for boilers, jet engines, and gas turbines. From October 2010 to September 2011, he was a Visiting Researcher at the Georgia Institute of Technology. In 2014, he began research and development of ammonia-fueled gas turbines, and in April 2026, he was appointed General Manager of the Energy Conversion Department.
Day 3: Thursday, September 11th | 09:45 – 10:30
Room: Symphony
Title: Ammonia-Fueled Gas Turbine Combustion: Development Progress and Practical Challenges
Speaker: Dr. Masahiro Uchida (IHI Corporation, Japan)
Abstract:
Ammonia combustion faces critical challenges, including low reactivity, narrow flammability limits, and high NOx emissions. To address these issues, a combustor for a 2MW-class gas turbine has been developed, achieving stable combustion performance with low emissions. Long-term durability has also been demonstrated through more than 3,000 hours of cumulative operation. The results confirm the feasibility of ammonia as a practical carbon-free fuel for gas turbine applications. Based on these achievements, the developed technologies are now being extended to the design and development of combustors for large scale gas turbines.
Day 3: Friday, September 11th | 11:15 – 12:30
Room: Opus
Title: Green Energy Sources, Challenges of Power Generation
Moderator: Prof. Jörg Seume (Leibniz University Hannover, Germany)
Panelists: Dr. Masahiro Uchida (IHI Corporation, Japan), Prof. Denis Thibault (Hydro Quebec, Canada), Rasmus Sinnige (Atlas Copco, Germany), Dr. Larry Wang (MingYang Smart Energy, USA)
Abstract:The global transition toward cleaner energy is reshaping power generation and creating new technical and operational challenges. This panel will explore renewable integration, flexible power generation, emerging technologies and fuels, and the evolving role of gas turbines. Panelists will discuss how the industry can balance sustainability, reliability, energy security, and affordability while meeting growing global energy demand.
