Panel 1: Best Practices for Career Paths in Different Countries
In the power and propulsion industries, typical career paths continue to differ between countries despite the continuing globalization of the companies involved. Leading and quickly developing countries in the power and propulsion industries differ in aspects such as:
- To what extent are doctoral degrees a prerequisite for management positions in R&D and general management?
- How do companies promote the technical skill of their engineers, e.g., provide graduate training in turbomachinery to skilled and promising employees with undergraduate degrees?
- Do companies advance the business skills of technically highly qualifies personnel to have managers with excellent technical and business skills?
- Do universities promote the movement of engineers with industrial experience in R&D from industry into professorships? Are industrial careers open to academics?
The panel will offer insight on the career paths both in academia and industry, as the esteemed panelists will discuss the most prevalent career patterns for engineers in different countries and share their personal experiences.

Chair → Prof. Jörg Seume (Leibniz University Hannover)
Panelists → Dr. Philipp Jenny (MAN Energy Solutions) → Prof. Scott Morris (University of Notre Dame) → Dr. Xavier Ottavy (CNRS) → Dr. Andrew Wheeler (Cambridge University)
→ Dr. Zuozhi Zhao (Siemens)
