Keynote Speaker
Dr. Fujimori received his Ph.D. in Mechanical engineering from Tohoku University and has been engaged in the research and development of combustion technologies for gas turbines and boiler power generation for over 37 years since joining IHI in 1988. He has also contributed to the development of fluidized bed gasification technology and CO₂ recovery oxy-fuel boiler technology. In the field of ammonia power generation, he served as the PI for the national SIP project from 2014 to 2018, promoting the development of ammonia combustion technologies for gas turbines and boilers. Currently, he is responsible for formulating and advancing strategies for next-generation energy technologies, including ammonia fuel. From 2022 to 2023, he served as the President of the Combustion Society of Japan and is currently also a Professor at the Institute of Fluid Science, Tohoku University.
Day 1: Wednesday January 14th | 17:00 – 17:30
Title: Energy Conversion Using Ammonia in Marine Propulsion and Turbine Power Generation
Abstract: Coming Soon
Ammonia is a hydrogen energy carrier with great potential and can be used directly as fuel. IHI is engaged in the development and practical application of key technologies across the entire value chain, from ammonia production and storage to utilization. The key to progress in this field lies in the development of ammonia-fueled power generation and propulsion technologies. Since the early 2010s, IHI has been at the forefront of technological advancement in the domains of gas turbines, boilers, and marine engines. The commencement of technical demonstrations was initiated in 2021 through the NEDO’s Green Innovation (GI) Project, and consistent progress is being made towards the objective of commercial implementation of the technology by 2030. In the field of gas turbine engineering, IHI has achieved a significant milestone with the development of a 2 MW-class gas turbine that utilizes ammonia as a fuel source. This innovative turbine has undergone extensive long-term endurance testing, exceeding 2,700 hours, demonstrating its reliability and durability. In addition, IHI has commenced development of large-scale industrial ammonia-fired gas turbine technology. In 2024, IHI and IHI Power Systems successfully operated a medium-speed diesel engine with up to 95% ammonia cofiring ratio, as well as completed sea trials using a tugboat equipped with two ammonia-fired engines. This has been demonstrated to be an effective strategy in achieving a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, thereby meeting the 2040 target set out in the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s roadmap for carbon neutrality. In addition, development is underway for engines capable of operating on 100% ammonia. With regard to countermeasures against ammonia leakage, assuming the engine is located in a sealed space within the ship, various measures have been implemented to enhance safety levels. This presentation provides a overview of the current status of technological developments and the efforts being made to implement them within society.
