Keynote Speaker + Panelist
Fay is the Associate Director for Flight Strategy, Integrated Aviation Systems Program for NASA Aeronautics. In this capacity he leads planning and formulation of large flight demonstrations for NASA. Fay is also serving as the Chief Engineer on the U.S. Department of Defence sponsored Blended Wing Body (BWB) Flight Project, a multiyear effort to stimulate widespread adoption of the BWB aircraft.
During 2021 and 2022, Fay led pre-formulation activities with U.S. Industry associated NASA’s Sustainable Flight Demonstrator. From 2016-2021, he led pre-formulation and formulation activities associated with a Megawatt-class electrified powertrain system flight demonstration project with the industrial base, other government, and academia. These two efforts successfully transitioned to formal projects within the Aeronautics portfolio and are currently underway.
From 2009-2016, Fay was the Project Manager of the Environmentally Responsible Aviation Project within NASA’s Integrated System Research Program. In this role, he directed the formulation and execution of NASAs integrated system research project, working in partnership with Industry, FAA, AFRL and other government agencies. The technology development project was focused on research, development and integration of engine and airframe (BWB and tube/wing) technologies to dramatically reduce carbon and noise footprints of airliners.
Fay is a graduate of Virginia Tech (Aerospace Engineering, B.S., 1981, M.S., 1982, Ph.D., 1988) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.B.A., 1997). He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and a Fellow of the AIAA.
Keynote 6: Decarbonization Challenges and Strategies for the Aviation Sector
Thursday, January 16th
12:00 – 12:45 | HG F 30 | Audi Max
Abstract:
Collier will be providing context for decarbonization of the aviation sector, provide a quick overview of NASA flight-based activities making contributions, and make some detailed remarks about the USAF Blended Wing Body Flight Demonstration and will describe how this activity supports decarbonization of the aviation sector.
Panel 3: Climate Impact of Air Transportation
Thursday, January 16th
09:30 – 11:00 | HG F 30 | Audi Max
Moderator: Vince Sidwell (Pratt & Whitney)
Panelists: Sean Bradshaw (Pratt & Whitney), Fay Collier (USG), Jos Buitenhuis (KLM), Herve Morvan (Rolls Royce), Bram Peerlings (NLR)
Abstract:
This panel will delve into the multifaceted relationship between air transportation and climate change, exploring current and future impacts of aviation on global emissions. Industry leaders and researchers will discuss advancements in sustainable aviation fuels, emerging technologies, and operational practices to reduce the environmental impact of air travel. Attendees will gain insights into collaborative efforts to balance the growing demand for air transportation with climate goals, including both CO2 and non-CO2 impacts.
