Joe Ran
Keynote Speaker
With experience spanning the transportation energy value chain to the electric power sector with an emphasis on energy transition, Joe Ran leads World Energy’s Business Development and Project Development effort to initiate carbon-reduction projects in hard to decarbonize sectors. Joe’s past assignments in engineering, operations improvements, commercial operations, strategic planning, and M&A are well suited to help World Energy achieve its mission to make net-zero a reality.
Past accomplishments included:
• Leading Shell’s best practice developments in hydroprocessing technology • Improving operations discipline to enhance plant production capacity
• Achieving record regional earnings by being a first mover in new feedstock
and optimizing commercial channels of fuel sales
• Driving revenue growth through acquisitions and strategic investment
in the energy value chain
• Developing strategic plans for California utilities to achieve net-zero by 2045
Joe Ran graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering.
Keynote 12: The role of low-carbon H2 to decarbonize aviation
Thursday, January 18th
15:20 – 15:50 HG F 30 | Audi Max
Abstract:
My topic will dive into the trajectory of fuel technologies to decarbonize aviation. Given the current excitement on green hydrogen, it’s helpful to add perspective on the role of green H2 as an aviation fuel vs using it as input to make SAF and e-SAF (aka Power-to-Liquid). Additionally, given the urgency to displace 100 billion gallons/year of fossil aviation fuel, it’s critical that we scale the production of H2 and SAF at speed. This challenge is daunting and requires coordination across multiple dimensions – policy, investment, technology advancement, infrastructure readiness. Given the confluence of the factors stated, we can present a scenario of technology adoption. This POV helps inform early decisions on investment.
