Keynote 8: Novel Technologies for Utility Scale Long Duration Energy Storage: Competitive Deployment
From 2020 to May 2022, he was responsible of the Product Development Programs in Ansaldo Energia within the Product and Technology Unit, leading new units and service business turbomachinery product portfolio evolution.
Previously, from 2018 to 2020, he has led the Technology Unit dealing with gas turbines validation rigs, material laboratories and technology development programs, supporting the strategic integration of Alstom large gas turbine platform technologies with existing product lines.
From 2015 to 2018, he was based in China as Chief Technical Officer in the newly established JV for gas turbine business between Ansaldo Energia and Shanghai Electric, fostering the startup and growth of the company since its incorporation.
Prior to that, he took several management positions in Ansaldo Energia, including Program Manager for H class gas turbine development and Head of Service Platform in the Product Development organization.
Mauro started his energy industry career in 2000 in GE Oil&Gas, as Project Manager for upstream applications. He holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from University of Genoa and an MBA from Bocconi University of Milan.
Long duration energy storage technologies can provide distinctive advantages vs other shorter-duration energy storage solutions and so unlock further exploitation of renewable energy into the electrical grids.
To meet the decarbonization targets, the world’s electricity grids will need to deploy massive investments of energy storage technologies by 2030. In this scenario, Ansaldo Green Tech (a company controlled by Ansaldo Energia) has recently taken steps to develop solutions for grid scale long duration applications.
Characteristics of the innovative technologies at the core of each storage solution, technology readiness and industrial setup implications are discussed, in the frame of implementation of first commercial projects from today to 2025.
