This was truly an enjoyable event that would not have been possible without your strong support.

GPPS Montreal18
Chairman’s Message

The first GPPS North American Conference was held from May 7th to 9th in Montreal, Canada.  With over 200 attendees, 85 peer reviewed technical papers, six panel sessions, and five keynote speakers this was an excellent occasion to meet with turbomachinery and energy experts from all over the world, creating many opportunities for networking, collaboration, and building of trusting relationships. We are grateful to our sponsors, attendees, and GPPS staff who made this a successful event.

Montreal, being the second largest city in Canada and among one of the 30 largest cities in North America, provided a beautiful venue for the conference at the Palais des Congres.  Montreal is an international technology hub for all types of turbomachinery with companies such as Pratt & Whitney, General Electric, Siemens, Bombardier, Bell Helicopter Textron, CAE, all having major facilities here.

Our conference theme this year was Emerging Technology for Power and Propulsion. The five keynote speakers from GE, Siemens, Pratt & Whitney, Camfill, and Hanwha gave exciting and thought-provoking presentations focusing on a range of applications, such as power generation, propulsion and oil & gas, from technological as well as business perspectives. The six panel discussions explored new business and technological drivers, such as additive manufacturing, hybrid propulsion, modern machinery education, as well as digitalization, and brought insight into future directions of market and technology development.  Other highlights of the conference included the GPPS Lifetime Achievement Award presentation to Mike Dunn of Ohio State University, and an update on the progress of GPPS by GPPS Chairman Reza Abhari.  Finally, the GPPS Monday night reception held on  the roof terrace of the congress center was a great opportunity for social networking.

As the chair of the GPPS Montreal Conference I want to thank again the Executive Conference Chair, Charles Litalien of Pratt & Whitney, the Technical Program Program Chair, Ibrahim Yimer of the National Research Council Canada, and the local organizing committee, as well as all the technical program organizers and contributors including track chairs, panel chairs, session chairs, authors, and reviewers.  This was truly an enjoyable event that would not have been possible without your strong support.
