Keynote: Additive Manufacturing Challenges and Opportunities at Siemens Energy
Abstract:
AM technology is a novel disruptive technology, enabling 3D Transformation:
1. Product Transformation (e.g. shift from conventional design to innovative Design For AM (DFAM));
2. Manufacturing Transformation (e.g. shift from prototyping / experimentation to mainstream industrial production), and
3. Business Transformation (e.g. customization, ‘zero’ inventory, spare parts on demands).
In this keynote presentation a short overview of different AM technology (e.g. plastic, metal), AM trends, challenges and opportunities will be discussed.
Deeper dive into current status and results, achieved by Siemens Energy in the area of AM technologies development and industrialization (e.g. AM components design, validation, implementation, serial manufacturing and accumulated field experience) will be presented and discussed as well.
It will be shown that application of AM technology in Power Generation industry enables significant performance improvement, emissions reduction and lifetime extension of the gas turbines.
It will be demonstrated that AM is speeding up the time to market for new advanced gas turbines and/or quick upgrades of the currently installed GT fleets. Examples of these accelerations will be presented and discussed.
To support and drive greenhouse gas emissions reduction and decarbonize Power Generation Industry, Siemens Energy is working on the development of low emissions combustors and has developed green fuels-capable burners (biofuel & hydrogen). It was the AM technology, that enabled the design of these burners. As a result, the SGT-600, -700 and -800 can today be offered to run on up to 75 vol-% H2 in the fuel. Two SGT-600 gas turbines have been sold to petrochemical industry in Brazil to run on process gas with up to 60 vol-% H2 with NOx emission guarantee of 25 ppm. This site is one of our reference sites demonstrating high H2 capability.
Utilization of AM technology for design and manufacturing of new advanced cooling systems (cannot be realized by any other technologies) of the GT’s hot gas path components enabling significant savings of the cooling air and, as a result, substantial engine efficiency improvements and/or components lifetime extension due to more advanced cooling systems. Additional engine efficiency could be achieved via aerodynamic improvements of turbine vanes and blades due to practically unlimited AM design and manufacturing capability.
Successful design, manufacturing, performance, and operation of SGT-700 turbine AM vanes will be discussed in this presentation as well.
Reliable operation of GT’s AM components at real field operation conditions is demonstrated. At Siemens Energy the total accumulated field experience of GT AM components exceeded 1 700 000 operating hours.
