Fabian has been working in MTU for more than 15 years starting as development en-gineer in the performance department working on the development of the first genera-tion Geared Turbofan for the Airbus A320NEO. After his transition to the technology department he was responsible for future engine concepts within European research programs before co-leading the set-up of MTU’s Inno Lab, an incubator for revolution-ary ideas. He was then appointed Innovative Propulsion Director where he was re-sponsible for technology strategy with a special focus on climate neutral aviation.
Fabian holds a Diploma of Aeronautical and Space Engineering from the University ot Stuttgart in Germany.
Keynote: Sustainable Propulsion – A Brief Look at Cost
Abstract:
Climate neutrality is the big challenge of aviation. With continuous efficiency gains and lower weight and drag CO2 has been significantly reduced over the past. Between 1950 and today the aircraft efficiency in fuel burn and CO2 per passenger kilometer decreased by more than 80%. This trend will continue with next generation aircraft. However, due to the already very high efficiency levels the average annual change will become much smaller in future until reaching a natural physical limit. Current state of science also shows that besides direct CO2 emissions non-CO2 effects have a significant impact on the climate. At the same time there are ongoing discussions in the EU to include non-CO2 effects in the Emission Trading System.
The keynote briefly discusses the impact of future technology improvements and the introduction of sustainable energy carriers on energy and climate cost.
