Arkadiusz Szatkowski is a compressor airfoil mechanical lead design engineer working at GE Aerospace Poland. He is holding master’s degree in Mechatronics and graduated Lodz University of Technology. He is an experienced mechanical designer varying from industrial machinery, agricultural equipment up to Power and Aviation turbomachinery: combustor and compressor mechanical design. He is also experienced as an operational air traffic control coordinator. His additional activities include Early Career Professional Organization promoting young engineers and developing their technical knowledge within GE Aerospace.

Keynote: Development of a Turboprop Engine Compressor with Significantly Improved Key Parameters

Abstract:

The keynote describes strategy, execution and results of a new compressor development process with the purpose of its future application in a next generation turboprop aircraft. Prime focus on compressor crucial parameters and characteristics improvements resulted in high performance compression system, positively impacting operation and efficiency of the entire engine & aircraft. Superior engine output power at the target flight ceiling, competitive fuel consumption index (>15% SFC reduction), longer operating time between overhaul (5,000 hours) and high power to mass ratio (>5.5 SHP/kg) were successfully demonstrated.

Design of the new compressor relies on various technologies to maximize engine system performance. Mechanical, aerodynamic, material technology and aerothermal solutions in conjunction with manufacturing technologies must be utilized and balanced to increase overall compressor performance. In presented case, critical design criteria were met resulting in well performing and well-balanced compressor system.
Project’s activities covered industrial research and experimental works, aimed to create the new compressor, develop its prototype, and perform tests in representative environments of real-life operating conditions, including flight testing.
